Late Romans - Pendraken 10mm

Recently I made my first foray in to 10mm figures. I made two bases of Late Roman infantry, Pendraken figures. Shields and banners are hand-painted.

These are diminutive little fellows, and the detail and proportions of course are not going to be as nice as with 28mm figures, but I really like the effect the unit makes as a whole - and of course they paint up rather faster.

My goal is to make a Late Roman army and a Gothic force to go up against it.

Here is a shot for size comparison. On the left is a group of 6mm figures (Baccus Seven Years War French) and on the right is a 28mm figure (Relic Miniatures)

  1. There be Giants! Excellent work James. They look so good I could mistake them for 28MM. I received the 2MM figs I ordered and I don't think I can do it. Plus I think they are a little small for 1/1200, at least the buildings are. Maybe 3MM would have been closer.

    1. Thanks Vol, they were fun figures to paint. I nice balance of individual detail, and small enough stature to make a large unit in a small area.

I can't even picture what 2mm figures would look like! That would be some pretty painstaking painting......

  2. Can I ask if you replaced the spears with wire?

  3. Hi Dave,

I didn't replace the spears, but I did trim down the spearheads. I felt they were a bit out of scale. That was the only adjustment I made to these figures, which are great little sculpts. They'll win you over to a new scale if you're not careful.

I love the work you and Andrew do over on the SD blog, and I have to keep harassing you guys, asking what brand of paints you use for flesh tones. In that regard, as in so many others, you guys are far beyond the competition.

  5. James, well you have done it...I ordered up a few packs of these. 10mm...what am I thinking about???

Flesh tones are, vallejo Tan or foundry terracota b, then vallejo dwarf skin and then elf flesh. Some times I add a little foundry expert flesh d.

    1. Thanks for the paint information David. And I offer my condolences on catching the 10mm bug, it's difficult to shake - James

  7. Thanks Thomas, I'm glad you like them. I've based these figures on 80mm by 40mm bases, thinking that eventually I'll have a couple of nice forces for Impetus.

I'd actually never heard of Steve Barber's figures before - they look really great. I'm going to have to resist getting some, I've got so many things to paint already!

    1. Thanks Steve, I appreciate it. The shields turned out to be easier to do than I thought they would. But for anyone wanting to speed the process up, I think LBM make suitable transfers too.
